In short, Juneteenth is a day of freedom.

June 19th, 1865 was the day that Abraham Lincoln signed into effect the documentation that made slavery illegal in the United States of America.

This date was a pivotal shift in America, and while some enslaved individuals remained oppressed for years after this date, it was a step towards a country that truly values freedom for all.

While many school districts are improving their lesson plans as they pertain to the history of Black-America, older children and adults likely weren’t exposed to Juneteenth and many other traditionally “Black” holidays. This is exactly why it is so crucial to put energy into educating yourself and your family about this newly-declared Federal holiday.

Of course this holiday is going to look different depending on your background, education level about the subject, and family demographic. That being said, here are a few great ways anyone can put effort into having a meaningful Juneteenth.

1. Educate yourself with Black authors and creators

Education is at the root of a consequential Juneteenth celebration and it is equally important to ensure your education material shows a true representation of Black America and History.

To do this, it’s a great idea to read material from Black authors, or watch movies similarly made by Black artists. Of course these vary in nature in regards to maturity level so make sure to find something impactful yet appropriate for your audience.

2. Shop and celebrate by support Black Owned Businesses

Did you know that only 9.5% of the businesses in America are Black owned?

There are plenty of factors that contribute to this from the impacts that slavery/segregation had on generational wealth, to the racism that Black entrepreneurs still face in the industry. It is a space that is in need of attention and support, and as a consumer it is really easy for us to help with this.

So, this Juneteenth try your hardest to only support Black owned businesses, and in the future, try and incorporate these consumer choices in your everyday life!

3. Look for a celebration in your area

With the vaccine roll-out in full effect, things are starting to look more normal and Juneteenth is a great way to reconnect with your community!

Many cities and areas are holding various different Juneteenth celebrations that aim to celebrate Black joy, honor Black history, and reflect on Black-America as a whole. Oftentimes these celebrations turn educationally and reflective and could be a meaningful experience for anybody.

Everyone celebrates differently whether this is the first Juneteenth you’ve recognized, or a generational tradition at this point. As long as the goal is to have a meaningful day, and to do so respectfully, it is a holiday-well-done- in our books!
