Eureka Native and Grammy Award Winner Sara Bareilles Announces Her Performance at International Women's Day Concert Will Benefit Girls With Impact Scholarship Program
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 24, 2022
Eureka, CA – In advance of Women’s History Month, Sara Bareilles, the Eureka native who went on to become a Grammy Award-winning songwriter, producer, and actor, today announces that her performance at International Women’s Day Concert in New York City on March 8th will help raise funds for the Girls With Impact scholarship program. Her support will enable 500 young women ages 14-24 to participate in Girls With Impact’s 10-week Business Academy at no cost, teaching them entrepreneurship skills and fostering the next generation of California business leaders.
"I’m incredibly proud to be from Humboldt County. Our community inspired, encouraged and uplifted my creativity in my youth and has continued to shape my career over the years,” said Bareilles. “That’s why I want to pay it forward and help connect young women in Eureka and throughout Humboldt County to the empowering programming of Girls With Impact. There is so much potential for creative leadership to be nurtured there, and I can’t wait to see what unfolds.”
The Girls With Impact Business Academy takes place online, with live instruction from business professionals who both prepare students for a career in entrepreneurship, but also inspire the confidence to take risks. In small classes, the young women turn their personal passions into a business plan and, along the way, learn fundamentals of business – from problem solving and critical thinking to the basics of financial technology and public speaking.
Girls With Impact CEO Jennifer Openshaw, a California native, said, “We’re incredibly thankful to Sara Bareilles for partnering and sharing her talents to support the next generation of young leaders. Her support will be invaluable to so many young women and their families across northern California, giving them a tremendous leg-up for college and career.”
Many graduates of the Girls With Impact Business Academy have gone on to receive college scholarships, and many have started their own businesses. Anika Mistry, 17, from northern California, said, “My confidence went through the roof because of Girls With Impact.” Through the Academy, Mistry created a venture, DevMindVR, that uses virtual reality to help people with autism.
Eligible women and girls from Humboldt County who are interested in applying for a Girls With Impact scholarship can do so now at girlswithimpact.org, using the code SARABSCHOLAR. Applicants whose household income is below $65,000 per year are eligible to enroll in the course at no cost. Classes run on a quarterly basis and the application deadline for the upcoming quarter is April 4th.
Tickets to the International Women’s Day Benefit Concert at Town Hall in New York City featuring Bareilles as well as Nkeki Obi-Melekwe of Broadway’s smash hit TINA – The Tina Turner Musical, as well as Grammy Award Winner Jennifer Nettles, are on sale now.
