9 College Admissions Tips to Keep You on Track

There’s so much going on these days where the college admission process might seem another daunting task to add to the mix. To help you out, we’re sharing a list of some college admissions tips to make sure that you stay on track this year and meet your deadlines.

  1. Know your deadlines: Many colleges have different dates when materials are due. Keep track by making a list in your calendar and refer to them often, giving yourself enough time to have all of the required paperwork, transcripts, etc.

  2. Read the instructions before you start: This might sound simple, but most colleges have different pieces of data that they are looking for. Be sure to read everything through before you begin the actual application process and ask questions if you are unsure of what is required.

  3. Proofread and edit: Before you hit send make sure that you are submitting your best work by rereading everything and making necessary edits. If you aren’t great in this area, consider asking a parent, a teacher, or a friend for help.

  4. Differentiate yourself: We all come from different places and have different experiences. Be honest with you are by sharing your journey, accomplishments, and struggles to help you stand out of the pack. At Girls With Impact, many of our graduates include their involvement in our mini-MBA program in their college essays, giving them a leg-up where they highlight their experiences and more about the businesses they created. This is an incredible way to get a leg-up showcasing their independent work and leadership.

  5. Think about your recommendations: Recommendations don’t only have to be from your teacher or counselors. You can also ask for recommendations beyond your schooling such as your employer or even your Girls With Impact coach.

  6. Keep a record of everything: Make sure to keep copies of everything from your application. You should also retain a copy of your actual application for your records.

  7. Confirm your application: While you will likely get an automated email confirmation, it’s always good to double-check. Call your prospective colleges’ admission deck for a peace of mind.

  8. Look into financial aid and scholarships: At the same time, you should also look into grant, scholarship programs ,and financial aid, which has a separate application process.

  9. Breathe, relax, and be patient: You did it! And now the hard part: the waiting game. Admission letters usually arrive around March or April (unless you opted for early admissions) as well as any financial awards.
